Founders Azacca IPA: A Tropical Addition to Their IPA lineup

Man I love these videos. You not only learn something about the breweries and their beers, but if you're not careful you'll learn something about beer and hops and the like. Who knew? Here's another good one on Azacca hops and Founders excellent Azacca IPA.
Founders Brewing: When our Brewmaster first encountered the experimental Azacca hop it didn’t even have a name - instead just a jumble of letters and numbers. We quickly learned what a powerhouse it was, with the ability to bring huge tropical aroma and flavor to the much-loved IPA style.

Oskar Blues Adds 16-Can Packs of Pinner

Longmont, CO - Continuing their tradition of packaging innovation Oskar Blues Brewery is adding four more pinnertrations to the existing PINNER Throwback IPA 12-packs. The new 16-can package will launch in the ColoRADo market just in time for the holiday season while national distribution will follow in early 2017.

Last year PINNER Throwback IPA was the #7 new brand launch in craft beer (according to Brewers Association) and quickly became Oskar Blues' number two hit behind Dale's Pale Ale. In February PINNER was added to the Oskar Blues CANundrum Mixed 12-Pack alongside Dale's Pale Ale, Mama's Little Yella Pils and Oskar Blues IPA.

PINNER is dry-hopped with several different heady hops, including a killer experimental variety, giving it a tropical, stoned fruit aroma with hints of pine and smooth malt in the flavor. The brewery expanded the strain by lighting up Passion Fruit PINNER for craft beer drinkers in the summer of 2016. The limited release sultry spinoff accentuated the passion fruit and citrus juice attributes of the original PINNER and cranks them up for the summer season. Look for Passion Fruit Pinner again May through August in 2017.

"Many things contribute to flavor in beer, and with Pinner it's a focus on hops and malt--with a considerable nod to the hops," said Oskar Blues ColoRADo head brewer Tim Matthews. "With the lower ABV, layers of flavor build on one another-- with one sip citrus, the next sip pineapple, next sip papaya, next sip passion fruit, next sip toasted bread--and then on to the next pint."

America's first craft beer 16-pack is a great grab-n-go package and at 4.9 percent ABV and a dry-hopped 35 IBUs, its easy to throw 'em back.

Find #PinnerIPA and #SipSipGive at your favorite watering hole or a beer shop near you with www.oskarblues.com/beerfinder.

I've had the pleasure of having some beer from the great folks at Prestonrose Farm and Brewing Co. up in Paris, AR and I can't recommend them enough. The wife and were already hoping to visit them soon and after watching this really cool video shot by P. Allen Smith, we now want to go even more so. Looks like such a cool vibe and a neat place to see. Plus, yes, the beer.

Founders Breakfast Stout: A Wakeup Call

Founders Brewing Co: "We’ve long believed in using only the best ingredients, knowing they result in the best flavor. With a beer like Breakfast Stout, a harmonious combination of oats, chocolate and coffee, it’s crucial that each of those ingredients are of the highest quality. Our hometown neighbors at Ferris Coffee and Nut embarked on an ambitious journey to win back their role as roasters of the coffee used in Breakfast Stout. Much like we did in our early years, this meant questioning the status quo and making a bold commitment to only produce the very best. This is the story of Breakfast Stout."

The Original Golden Monkey Tale

Fact: the first beer I ever had from Victory Brewing was Golden Monkey, a delicious Belgian Tripel, way back in my pre-Untappd days (so I can't look it up, but I think it was in Florida?). Needless to say I was hooked on the brewery and the beer right off the bat and was so glad to see them enter our market last year. Here's a fun video on my Victory cherry-buster.

Patch to Batch, Rogue Pumpkin Patch Ale

Judging from all the whining and moaning on the internet, I realize a lot of people don't care for pumpkin spice beers. Personally I think it's a fun fall tradition and enjoy a lot of the creativity that comes with them. One of my favorites is Rogue's Pumpkin Patch Ale, which I look forward to every year.

Rogue Ales & Spirits: "Pumpkin Patch Ale is finally here and it is worth the wait. We patiently grew and harvested our own pumpkins at Rogue Farms in Independence, Oregon. This pumpkin beer is made with real pumpkins that we roasted ourselves at the brewery in Newport, Oregon. Crafted patch to batch. Try it for yourself."

Arkansas Uptappd Check-Ins

It's been a few months, so I thought I could update my Arkansas Untappd check-ins list.

Not a lot of changes at the top, except Lost Forty jumped over Ozark, but there's a lot of shuffling at further down. And 501 Brewing makes the list!

New Release: Oskar Blues Brewery Hotbox Coffee Porter

Beer just got a caffeinated kick in the beans.

Oskar Blues Brewery and their in-house, coffee addiction-inspired Hotbox Roasters tag-team once again to pair roasted aromas, flavors and a frothy buzz together in Hotbox Coffee Porter.

Hotbox Coffee Porter (6.4% ABV/30 IBUs) has a malted base extracted from English and German roasted and caramel malts, and is comprised of flavors like roasted nuts, crème brûlée, cocoa and caramel. Hotbox Roasters then crashes the party and infuses potent, cold-extracted coffee from Burundian and Ethiopian beans and deals old flavors and aromas of dark plums, chocolate and hints of blueberry.

Established in 2012, Great Raft Brewing is one of the fastest growing craft breweries in the South. In order to meet demand, both within Louisiana and the region, the brewery is making investments in both quality and capacity. An additional 140 barrels of capacity will be added to Great Raft’s cellar along with a state-of-the-art GEA centrifuge. “As our beer travels farther from home, it’s critical that we take the steps necessary to protect and deliver the beer in the best means possible. The addition of a centrifuge brings our overall quality program up-to-speed with the biggest and best in the industry,” said founder and President Andrew Nations. “From day one, we’ve put our money where our mouth is with quality. Simply put, this significant and progressive investment makes our beer taste better. That’s really all there is to it,” he added.

In addition to the increased fermentation capacity for their traditional program, Great Raft is also doubling down on capacity for its Belgian program. Since launching this part of the operation in early spring 2016, Great Raft has already won a medal for one of its Belgian-style beers, Farmhouse Slang – a mixed fermentation saison – for which it won Bronze at the 2016 U.S Beer Open Championships. “The addition meets an immediate need to produce a greater volume and variety of Belgian inspired beers. The response has been outstanding as more and more people demand beers of the sour and funky variety”.

Great Raft Brewing is excited about this new market expansion and eager to bring their beer across state lines for the first time into Arkansas and Texas. “Growing to neighboring states feels very organic. We’ve always said we would take care of Louisiana first, and that isn’t changing. It’s time to start serving new markets who routinely express interest in our beer,” said Nations. “Despite the temptation to share our beer with as many people as possible, we will continue to take a relatively slow, methodical approach to growth.”

Great Raft Brewing beers will be available across Arkansas beginning the week of September 19, 2016 and a Texas rollout will be announced soon. To celebrate the launch of Great Raft Brewing’s beers, craft beer drinkers will be able to join the owners and sales team of Great Raft Brewing at a variety of soon-to-be-announced specialty events throughout each market.

Video: BJ's/Green Flash Hop Pact IPA

I'm lucky enough to live within walking distance of a BJ's Brewhouse in North Little Rock and I enjoy checking out their house beers regularly. I especially love it when a new one pops up, as it did recently with this collaboration Rye IPA they did with Green Flash Brewing. I stopped in this weekend to check it out for myself and found it to be quite tasty. Go check one out for yourself. Here's a bit of promo they did for it.

"In episode 4 of Pint Class, we learn about the flash of inspiration that led to the collaboration of BJ's Brewhouse and Green Flash Brewing Co. on Hop Pact IPA™!"

Stone's Throw Brewing Block on Rock is on Saturday, July 30th

Stone’s Throw Brewing Holds Block on Rock

3rd Annual Birthday Celebration on July 30 Benefits Historic Preservation

Little Rock, AR, July 21, 2016 – MacArthur Park neighborhood nano-brewery Stone’s Throw Brewing announced details for their third annual Block on Rock Birthday Bash today. The street festival is a celebration of the brewery taproom’s opening in 2013 and involves local food trucks, breweries, a distillery, bands, and community groups. Block on Rock is on Saturday, July 30 from 4:00-10:00pm on the two blocks north of the brewery’s 9th & Rock St. location.

“Block on Rock has become the biggest event of the year for Stone’s Throw. We get to throw a great party for our friends and neighbors, showcase the great food trucks that set up at the brewery, and share a drink with our friends in the local beverage industry all while getting down to some great music in our beautiful historic neighborhood!" -Ian Beard, Managing Partner Stone’s Throw Brewing

Admission to the block party is $5. Discounted armbands are available at the Stone’s Throw taproom for $3 from July 26-29. A portion of all gate revenue, alcohol, and food sales are donated to Preserve Arkansas, the only statewide non-profit organization focused on preserving Arkansas’s architectural and cultural resources. The previous two Block on Rock events have raised over $6000 for the group.

“Preserve Arkansas is thrilled to help celebrate the third birthday of Stone’s Throw Brewing on July 30! Not only is this a fun way to spend a Saturday, a portion of the proceeds from the Block on Rock Birthday Bash will benefit Preserve Arkansas’s education and advocacy efforts, which are designed to preserve Arkansas’s most important historic properties. Come celebrate Stone’s Throw Brewing’s adaptive reuse of a historic building in the MacArthur Park Historic District and support the statewide historic preservation efforts of Preserve Arkansas!" -Rachel Silva, Executive Director Preserve Arkansas

1200 people attended the first Block on Rock in 2014 taking planners completely by surprise. In 2015 organizers added a second block to accommodate more people, food trucks, and vendors. A stage was constructed for the musical acts, more volunteers helped with entry at the gates, other local breweries were invited, and more necessities like extra restrooms were included. The improvements lead to significantly shorter waits for food, drinks, and toilets despite attendance increasing to over 2000 last year.

“The first year was crazy. We sold more food in a couple of hours at Block on Rock than we did the whole time we were at Riverfest. This year I think we’re all planning on serving big numbers and we’ll be ready for them. After the Main Street Food Truck Festival this was the most trucks you found in one place last year.” -Justin Patterson, Owner The Southern Gourmasian

Block on Rock 3rd Birthday Bash publicity flier.
Both the 700 and 800 blocks of Rock St., located adjacent to the brewery, will be closed off for the event. Entrance gates will be located along Rock at the intersections of 7th, 8th and 9th Streets.  The stage and musical acts are sponsored by Road Runner convenience stores and are located just a few yards northwest of the brewery on Rock St. The Smittle Band performs at 5:00pm followed by the Big Dam Horns at 7:30pm; trees and buildings provide ample shade in the afternoon, and festival goers are encouraged to bring chairs. Beer is available in the brewery taproom and at an outdoor Stone’s Throw bar on the 700 block of Rock St.; food trucks and other beverage options will be available in the same area.

“Every year Block on Rock gets bigger, and every year we make improvements. This year’s festival builds upon the lessons learned from the past two and promises to provide quick and efficient service throughout so attendees can focus on having a good time.  We’re excited to have Road Runner sponsoring our stage this year with two local favorites: The Big Dam Horns and the Smittle Band. It will be the party of the summer!”  -Theron Cash, Managing Partner Stone’s Throw Brewing

Stone’s Throw Brewing is the product of four guys—Theron Cash, Brad McLaurin, Shawn Tobin and Ian Beard—who met in the local homebrew club, the Central Arkansas Fermenters. After doing most of the work themselves to turn a century old building in Little Rock’s MacArthur Park Historic District into a production facility, they began brewing operations on July 4, 2013 and opened an onsite taproom on August 1, 2013. Stone’s Throw Brewing specializes in small-batch, artisanal beers that are both creative and drinkable.

The Stone’s Throw Brewing taproom & biergarten is open to the public Tuesday-Thursday, 4:00-9:00 pm, Friday 4:00-10:00pm, Saturday 12:00-10:00 pm, and Sunday 11:00 am-9:00 pm. The taproom features locally made bar snacks and a rotating selection of food trucks. The brewery sponsors weekly events including #HOPSandHOPE every Tuesday with beer sales benefiting charity, all night happy hour and the #BetterWithBeerFreeMovie series on Wednesdays, #ArkiePubTrivia at 6:30pm on Thursdays, new beer releases every first Friday of the month (and most other Fridays as well), free brewery tours at 1:00pm and beer infusions at 4:00pm on Saturdays, and beer to go during regular business hours including Sundays.

Beer School: How to taste beer like a beer judge

Typical good stuff from The Craft Beer Channel:

Sometimes a beer should be served cold and slung back, other times we should think about what we're drinking. Jonny meets Ray Daniels, founder of the beer-serving accreditor Cicerone, to find out how to taste beer properly.

Turns out he's done it wrong all these years... but you probably knew that.

Video: Introducing Stone IPA V1.1

Stone Brewing: "We made a minor change to the dry-hop for Stone IPA back in late April, ultimately adding a little more hop complexity to the flavor. We thought the best way to discuss this update was to sit down with Stone CEO & co-founder Greg Koch, co-founder & Original Brewmaster Steve Wagner and former Brewmaster Mitch Steele…the folks who know Stone IPA best!"

Historic Arkansas Museum Celebrates 75th Year With A Special Beer

Historic Arkansas Museum’s 2nd Friday Art Night features Historic Neighborhood
July 8, 5 – 8 pm

LITTLE ROCK (June 28, 2016) – Historic Arkansas Museum, a museum of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, will open its historic grounds during 2nd Friday Art Night on July 8 from 5 to 8 pm. There will be live music by The Pickoids and Historic Arkansas Museum’s 75th anniversary beer, developed by Stone’s Throw Brewing, will be released. This special 2nd Friday Art Night will feature the museum’s original historical exhibit, the museum’s grounds—a preserved remnant of Little Rock’s oldest neighborhood, saved from demolition by museum founder Louise Loughborough and opened to the public 75 years ago in July.

Guests are invited to travel back in time during this historic happy hour as they explore historic gardens and encounter costumed interpreters in the Woodruff Print Shop, Brownlee Kitchen and in Little Rock’s oldest surviving structure—the Hinderliter Grog Shop (c. 1827). Visitors can experience living history by meeting Mr. Hinderliter in the Grog Shop, make wax seals in the Print Shop and sample a unique pioneer drink in the Brownlee Kitchen. Guests who visit each site will win a Historic Arkansas Museum car decal and will have a chance to win a special prize.

George Bros. Historic Arkansas Ale – by Stone’s Throw Brewing

Little Rock’s first brewers were German-born Alexander and Henry George who operated a biergarten in the mid-1800s on Rock Street. For the museum’s 75th anniversary, Ian Beard, Theron Cash and Leah Lambert of Stone’s Throw Brewing drew on their own research and that of the museum’s Arkansas-made team to create a tribute beer similar to a 19th century George Bros. brew. The George brothers came from a warm region of Germany which suggests that their beer would have been similar to Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Additional research revealed which brewing ingredients would have been available to the George brothers. With the addition of wild Arkansas yeast harvested by Grant Chandler (Lost Forty Brewing) from plums in Dunbar Community Garden, this 75th anniversary ale is an Arkansas-made ale of historic proportions!

Currently on exhibit:
• Illustrations by Sally Nixon
• Robert Lemming & Louis Watts
• Hugo & Gayne Preller’s House of Light
• A Diamond in the Rough: 75 Years of Historic Arkansas Museum
• We Walk in Two Worlds: The Caddo, Osage and Quapaw in Arkansas (permanent)
• The Knife Gallery (permanent)
• Historic Homes (permanent)

Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 - 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to the galleries and parking are free; admission to the historic grounds is $2.50 for adults, $1 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens. The Historic Arkansas Museum Store is open 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 - 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Historic Arkansas Museum is an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, which was created in 1975 to preserve and enhance the heritage of the state of Arkansas. Other agencies of the department are Delta Cultural Center in Helena, Arkansas Arts Council, Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, Mosaic Templars Cultural Center and Old State House Museum.

Press Release: Oskar Blues Launches Priscilla White Wit Wheat Nationwide

Long time draft offering now available in cans nationwide.

Longmont, CO & Brevard, NC & Austin, TX - Oskar Blues Brewery, the brewery that launched the craft beer-in-a-can apocalypse in 2002, announces the national launch of an AmeriCAN take on the Belgian Classic Wit, Priscilla White Wit Wheat. It's a Belgian White, Belgian Wit, Belgian Wheat...it's a White Wit Wheat (5.2% ABV, 20 IBUs).

The beer, which features orange peel and coriander spice, emanated from the basement blues music legacy Dave McIntyre (18 year Oskar Bluesologist) built at the original Oskar Blues Grill & Brew in Lyons, CO. On draft for over a decade, Priscilla's zesty citrus and light fresh baked bread aromas mix with spicy, fruity fermentation. Light bodied with a subtle savory spice accent and a dry, lightly tart finish you can nearly feel the flicker of the neon and sounds of the King. White Wit Wheat.

"Priscilla is a beer steeped in Oskar Blues' music history," said Chad Melis. "A longtime Oskar Blues favorite, we've decided its time to bring this amped up, electric brew from the basement and to the masses."

Oskar Blues, named "The hottest place to be on a Saturday night in Colorado" by Rolling Stone because of its roots in the Colorado music scene, will brew its first batch of Dale's Pale Ale at their new brewery and taproom in Austin, TX today. The brewery will continue its tradition of soul-savin' live music with a music venue as part of the Austin taproom.

Priscilla White Wit Wheat will launch throughout the month of June in all 50 states where Oskar Blues is sold and will be available in 12oz. 6-packs and draft. To learn more, visit www.oskarblues.com and always find Oskar Blues beer at https://www.oskarblues.com/beerFinder

Stone's Throw Brewing Announces Summer Seasonal Releases & June Special Events

Three beers join line-up for June through August run

Stone's Throw Brewing released details on three summer seasonal releases today. The MacArthur Park neighborhood nano-brewery rotates three categories of beer every season: a session beers, a high-gravity beer, and India Pale Ale (IPA). The 2016 summer releases will be available in the brewery taproom beginning on Friday, June 3.

"Most breweries make one beer as a seasonal. We're all about variety, though, and decided one wasn't enough. The three seasonals allow us to keep the same type of beer on tap year round while still switching up the specific recipe on a regular basis. That way we have a new IPA every three months instead of three IPAs on tap simultaneously. It keeps it interesting." -Theron Cash, Managing Partner

Ich Bin Ein Berliner Weiss returns for a second year as the summer "session," or low alcohol beer. Session beers are a classic European tradition, the lower alcohol content allowing a drinker to enjoy many during a setting without becoming inebriated. As its name implies, Berliner Weiss originated in the German capital. This style of unfiltered wheat beer is known for its characteristic tartness, created by the introduction of a special strain of brewing bacteria. In biergartens around Berlin the tart flavor is countered with flavored syrups for a light, refreshing cocktail. Stone's Throw will offer woodruff, dark cherry grenadine, and ginger syrups from Pink House Alchemy in Bentonville as an addition to each pint of Ich Bin Ein during its summer run.

"Both lower alcohol and sour beers have been growing in popularity in the craft beer world. Ich Bin Ein Berliner Weisse is a great combination of these two trends, and the perfect patio beer. We're excited to try the Pink House syrups out this year. The different flavor combinations will make this a great go to summer sipper." -Ian Beard, Managing Partner

First introduced during the brewery's first month of business in August 2013, Two Timin' American IPA became a summer seasonal in 2014. IPAs were created in the 18th century to survive the long journey from England to its colonies in India. Higher levels of both alcohol and hops--a flowering vine used by brewers to balance the sweetness of malted barley--act as a preservative to prevent spoilage. Two Timin' incorporates Centennial hops from the Pacific Northwest which provide citrusy notes with a clean, not overly bitter finish. A process called "single-hopping" is used, where only one variety is added to the beer for bittering, aroma, and flavor.

"The first beers we made when we opened up were all larger scale versions of our homebrew recipes. Adding the Centennial hops while the beer is still in the fermenter, what brewers call dry-hopping, really brings out the big citrus flavor that make this beer great for hot weather" -Brad McLaurin, Partner

Debuting for the first time on June 3 is a new high gravity seasonal for the summer. Papa Geyer's Imperial Pilsner is a crisp and refreshing strong lager. At 9% alcohol by volume, the brew measures twice as strong as most beers. A large amount of malted grain is used to create a high level of fermentable sugar, known as gravity, and results in the increased alcohol. The name Papa Geyer is in honor of the German immigrant that ran a beer hall and biergarten one block from the Stone's Throw brewery building in the late 19th century.

"When we found out that an old German biergarten was located at Rock and 10th streets just a block away, we figured it was a sign from the beer gods that this was the neighborhood to be in. Naming a beer after the post was the least we could do!" -Shawn Tobin, Partner

Along with the summer seasonal release party, the brewery plans a full schedule of events both onsite and around Central Arkansas during the month of June.
