March Gladness

Hey I realize the pandemic isn't over, but after the brutal winter we just survived and while staying pretty much locked down for a whole year, we needed March. We got out of the house. We got our first round of shots. We visited breweries. All seemed almost normal except for all the mask wearing and continued social distancing, but at least we've learned how to feel safer in public, especially with most places having outdoor seating and following guidelines of their own. And while going to breweries may not seem like a big deal to some, for me it felt like home.

In March I got over to Memphis to the brand new Wiseacre facility downtown and had a beer and pizza on a sunny, cool afternoon. I made it to the newly opened Blade & Barrel in Jacksonville 3 different times since their mid-March opening. The wife and I got out of town to visit Slate Rock Brewing in Amity and Native Dog Brewing in Camden on a pretty day to drive the backroads of southern Arkansas. We hit the interstate one Saturday to get over to Point Remove in Morrilton and have a pint in their fantastic taproom. Lastly, of course I made it to Stones Throw Brewing and Lost Forty in Little Rock and Flyway in North Little Rock during the month. Eight breweries in the month! Life is returning to normal.

It makes me so happy to see these breweries in the more rural places in Arkansas and highly suggest you get out and check them out because the only difference in them and some of the "big city taprooms" is the location. They're making quality suds and are busy (reduced capacity for now!) with passionate beer lovers looking to escape their homes and have actual conversations with other humans in person as well. With a new brewery opening in Bryant next month and a couple of breweries in the works up around Jonesboro our state is becoming a nice little craft beer haven.

Get out and check it out for yourself, and if I see you maybe I'll buy you a beer.

Press Release: Stone’s Throw Brewing Celebrates 5 years

Arkansas Rice Presents Annual Block on Rock Benefit for Preserve Arkansas

Little Rock, AR, July 18, 2018 – Downtown Little Rock’s Stone’s Throw Brewing announced plans for their fifth annual Block on Rock Birthday Bash today. The street festival is a celebration of the brewery’s opening in 2013 and involves local food trucks, breweries, entertainment, and community groups. Block on Rock is on Saturday, July 28 from 4:00-10:00pm on the two blocks of Rock St. north of the brewery’s location at 402 E 9th St in Little Rock.

“We love the way this little street festival has grown over the past five years! It’s by far the biggest event we do at Stone’s Throw, and this year we were able to really take Block on Rock to the next level with the help of sponsors like Arkansas Rice, Fassler Hall, and Dust Bowl Lanes & Lounge. The outpouring of community support we get each year has meant a great deal to us.” ~ Ian Beard, Managing Partner Stone’s Throw Brewing

Admission to the block party is $5. Discounted armbands are available at the Stone’s Throw taproom for $3 from July 24-27. A portion of all revenue benefits Preserve Arkansas, the only statewide non-profit organization focused on preserving Arkansas’s architectural and cultural resources. The 2017 Block on Rock raised approximately $4,500 for the group.

“Preserve Arkansas is extremely grateful for the generosity of Stone's Throw Brewing. Their Block on Rock Birthday Bash benefits our organization, providing necessary funding for Preserve Arkansas's statewide historic preservation advocacy efforts and educational programs. Happy 5th Birthday, Stone's Throw!” ~ Rachel Patton, Preserve Arkansas Executive Director

1200 people attended the first Block on Rock in 2014 taking planners completely by surprise. Since then organizers have more than tripled the festival area to include two blocks of Rock Street and the Pike-Fletcher-Terry Mansion Lawn.  The expansion allows more space for vendors such as food trucks, and a larger stage for musical acts.  Nearly 100 people staff the festival, ensuring easy entry at the gates and short waits for refreshments.  In addition, this year’s event features Arkansas Rice as the presenting sponsor.  Their assistance provides more promotional opportunities and a higher level of experience for festival goers. This year attendance is predicted to break 2,000.

“Consumers are increasingly interested in the entire farm to table process including from grain to glass, and our partnership with Stone’s Throw is an excellent opportunity to tell that story. Arkansas is the top rice producing state and this local collaboration is a natural fit for us.” ~ Lauren Waldrip Ward, Executive Director Arkansas Rice Federation

Both the 700 and 800 blocks of Rock St., located adjacent to the brewery, will be closed off for the event. 3 entrance gates will provide access: the JohnTheBeerSnob.com Gate at 7th St, the North Bar Gate at 8th St, and the Eagle Bank Mortgage Gate at 9th St.  Entertainment is sponsored by Fassler Hall and Dust Bowl Lanes & Lounge, with the mainstage located just a few yards northwest of the brewery on Rock St. The Big Dam Horns will perform two sets at 5:00 and 8:30pm, and The Creek Rocks play at 7:00pm; Arkansas Circus Arts will also feature a special “after dark” performance at 8:30pm.  Fassler Hall will also host the official Block on Rock After Party after the event ends at 10:00pm.  Trees and buildings provide ample afternoon shade in the festival area, and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs.

“Having Fassler Hall and The Dust Bowl as partners this year really lets us step up our entertainment game.  A larger, covered stage provides a better experience for the bands and a bigger sound for the fans. The Big Dam Horns have enjoyed playing Block on Rock the past couple of years and it’s great we can play again in 2018; we’re looking forward to what Arkansas Circus Arts has to offer during the after dark set. We’ll keep it funky for a good ole fashion street dance all night long!” ~ Theron Cash, Managing Partner Stone’s Throw Brewing & Bassist Big Dam Horns

This year continues the partnership with the Arkansas Arts Center with the Terry House Lawn & Marketplace. The grounds of the mansion will be part of the festival area creating a giant biergarten for people to enjoy and a community marketplace featuring local artists, businesses, and community groups will be set up on the lawn as well.  Directly across the street from the house, First Lutheran Church will be offering tours of their historic building from 4:00-7:00pm.

“The Arkansas Arts Center is happy to celebrate Stone’s Throw’s birthday at the 5th Annual Block on Rock. Our Terry House lawn will be open for everyone to enjoy throughout the day and relax in the shade. While there, we hope people learn more about the Arts Center and even peruse the pop-up Museum Shop! The Arkansas Arts Center is dedicated to the community and its partners like Stone’s Throw.” ~ Spencer Jansen, Manager of Member Experience Arkansas Arts Center

New in 2018 is the Block on Rock Collaboration Beer Fest. Stone’s Throw head brewer Theron Cash worked with Flyway Brewing, Rebel Kettle Brewing, Damgoode Brews, The Water Buffalo & Buffalo Brewing, and Diamond Bear Brewing to create five unique offering for the festival.  The annual Ales for ALS collaborative beer will also be premiered along with the official beer of Block on Rock, named “Golden Grain,” featuring Arkansas grown rice.

“I got to brew my first commercially available beer with Ca$h Money [Theron Cash], so it is cool to be able to collaborate and participate in Block on Rock with Stone's Throw.” ~ Josh Davis, Brewer Rebel Kettle Brewing Co.

Stone’s Throw Brewing is the product of four guys—Theron Cash, Brad McLaurin, Shawn Tobin and Ian Beard—who met in the local homebrew club, the Central Arkansas Fermenters. After doing most of the work themselves to turn a century old building in Little Rock’s MacArthur Park Historic District into a production facility, they began brewing operations on July 4, 2013 and opened an onsite taproom on August 1, 2013. Stone’s Throw Brewing specializes in small-batch, artisanal beers that are both creative and drinkable.

The Stone’s Throw Brewing taproom & biergarten is open to the public Tuesday-Thursday, 4:00-9:00pm, Friday 4:00-10:00pm, Saturday 12:00-10:00pm, and Sunday 11:00am-9:00pm. Pub style dining is available during normal hours of operation.  The brewery sponsors weekly events including #HOPSandHOPE every Tuesday with beer sales benefiting charity, all night happy hour on Wednesdays, #ArkiePubTrivia at 6:30pm on Thursdays, new beer releases every Friday, free brewery tours at 1:00pm Saturday, Beer Brunch Sundays from 11:00am-4:00pm, and beer to go during regular business hours including Sundays. Current beer selection, food menu, and upcoming events can be found at www.stonesthrowbeer.com, on Facebook at StonesThrowBrewing, Twitter @stonesthrowbrew, and Instagram @stonesthrowbrewing.

Beers To Cheer: February 2017

Here's we go with another month's picks for our "Beers To Cheer" from the Arkansas brewing scene! And we've got a little treat for you this month... not only are Michael, Brian and I telling you what pair of brews we got giddy over this month, but we've also got our first GUEST PICKER, one Mr. Steve Shuler from Rock City Eats *insert applause*.

So check out a whopping 8 total choices from these 4 Arkansas beer lovers for you to get out and discover for yourself! And if you missed last month's edition, by all means check it out right here: Beers To Cheer: January 2017.

Steve Shuler (@Steve_Shuler):

Rebel Kettle Barrel-Aged Wake'n'Flake - Wake ‘n’ Flake is one of the brews that put Rebel Kettle on the map. Before there was the best taproom/patio in Little Rock, John Lee and his companions brewed this excellent coffee and coconut cream stout ale for festivals around the state, quickly earning a reputation for Rebel Kettle as an adventurous and fearless beer maker. February’s barrel-aged version pushes the envelope again in two important ways. First, it’s everything a barrel beer should be; full, robust, but letting the original brew shine through instead of submitting it. Second, it embraces the lower ABV that few barrel-aged brews enjoy. The flavor is as big as a 10-percent brew, but at less than 6 percent ABV, it’s a beer that lets you enjoy the big taste without making you stop drinking sooner than you’d like. This one is off tap now, but you’ll be able to taste it again at the brewery’s one-year anniversary on April 1st. It’s a beer that will be worth the April Fool’s trip all by itself.

Moody Brews Katchiri's Bier 2017 - Even though he’s departed Little Rock for Northwest Arkansas and Bike Rack Brewing Company, it’s safe to say we’re fortunate to have a brewer in our state like Josiah Moody. Very few brewers anywhere (and I mean anywhere) have his knack for creating perfectly balanced brews with both technical and artistic expertise. His latest iteration of Katchiri’s Bier is no exception. Originally envisioned as a nuanced farmhouse saison, Moody has developed it into this gorgeous monster of an ale. Eclipsing 9 percent ABV, this year’s Katchiri’s Bier is still mellow and smooth, with an unmistakably buttery finish. Moody decided to age this one in gin barrels from Rock Town Distillery, and my goodness, what a choice that turned out to be. The leftover floral notes are the perfect accompaniment in Moody’s final Little Rock symphony. This beer is almost gone (Legacy Wine and Spirits still has it for growler fill-up), but the impact Moody made on our beer scene won’t fade anytime soon.

Scott (@WooPigBrewey):

Stone's Throw Biere de Gras - This is one that was requested by the Cajun/Creole restaurants in town for release leading up to Fat Tuesday. It's based on their biere de garde recipe but made to a more "sessionable strength." It has a wonderful toasted aroma and the flavor is a super easy-to-drink sweet malt and toasty caramel with warrior and saaz hops dancing around in the mix. A great beer to drink during Mardi Gras celebrations or paired with crawfish and spicy gumbo dishes. It definitely made my Fat Tuesday a little (a lot?) fatter.

Flyway Lord God Imperial Chocolate Stout -This big 11% imperial chocolate stout was a lot easier to find than the elusive Ivory-Billed Woodpecker for which it's named, but it disappeared (from my glass) pretty quickly. Dangerously drinkable for a huge beer, only slightly boozy, it's a full-bodied chocolate stout aged on a copious amount of fresh roasted Izard Chocolate cacao nibs. Why yes, I'll have a glass of liquefied, chocolate alcohol please.

Brian (@EBSorensen):

Ozark Beer Co. Onyx Coffee Stout - Lost amidst the hype of bigger, bolder beers from Ozark – such as the Rogers brewery’s Double IPA and the forthcoming BDCS 2017 – are smaller, more sessionable beers that have been there since day one. My personal favorite, and one I filled a growler with in mid-February, is Onyx Coffee Stout. The cream stout base is superbly complimented by cold brewed coffee provided by on-the-rise roaster Onyx Coffee Lab. Some coffee beers are nuanced, but this one screams java in every way possible. A velvety backdrop of chocolate and dark fruit is punctuated by roasted coffee notes. I could literally drink this one all day long, starting alongside my bacon and eggs in the morning.

Flyway Bluewing Berry Wheat - Back on February 4th I attended Frost Fest 2017 in Fayetteville, a gloriously freezing beer festival hosted by Fossil Cove Brewing Co. I could name any number of double IPAs, sours, or barrel-aged brews that I sampled on that day, but cutting through the haze and standing out with its pure simplicity was the flagship beer from North Little Rock’s Flyway Brewing Co. – Bluewing Berry Wheat. This easy drinker provided the necessary balance to a boozy, high-consumption day. A crisp body and tart blueberry effervescence scrubbed the tongue. Witbier is a much-maligned style that gets no respect, particularly when laced with fruit. However, Flyway pulls it off in such a way that even the manliest of men can drink Bluewing without fear of embarrassment. It is – quite simply – a well-made beer.

Michael (@fayettebrew):

Apple Blossom Bloodhound English Barleywine - This barleywine from Apple Blossom’s Brian Youngblood was one of the first beers I had in February and it made an impression that has stayed fresh in my mind all month. The English style elements keep Bloodhound strong but malty and smooth - smoother than most American style barleywines - which is appreciable regardless of whether the February weather is frigid or friendly. For a style that does not always get a lot of play in our state, this is a welcomed sight on the Apple Blossom chalk board. [Still on tap at ABBC as of this post.]

Fossil Cove Saturday Series #3: Shiny Green Bullet - Fossil Cove’s Saturday Series brings the staff who typically handle the non-brewing responsibilities of the business into the Brewdizzle (the name for Fossil Cove’s brewing space) to incorporate their style and flavor into the lineup in the form of a small batch release. The third in this series features the New Zealand Green Bullet hop in a way that lends a refreshing lime flavor to an overall easy drinking beer.  Seemingly readymade for the hotter months ahead, Shiny Green Bullet is also an excellent beer for introducing someone to the less bitter and dank side of hops.

Check back next month's for our March picks!

Stone's Throw Brewing Block on Rock is on Saturday, July 30th

Stone’s Throw Brewing Holds Block on Rock

3rd Annual Birthday Celebration on July 30 Benefits Historic Preservation

Little Rock, AR, July 21, 2016 – MacArthur Park neighborhood nano-brewery Stone’s Throw Brewing announced details for their third annual Block on Rock Birthday Bash today. The street festival is a celebration of the brewery taproom’s opening in 2013 and involves local food trucks, breweries, a distillery, bands, and community groups. Block on Rock is on Saturday, July 30 from 4:00-10:00pm on the two blocks north of the brewery’s 9th & Rock St. location.

“Block on Rock has become the biggest event of the year for Stone’s Throw. We get to throw a great party for our friends and neighbors, showcase the great food trucks that set up at the brewery, and share a drink with our friends in the local beverage industry all while getting down to some great music in our beautiful historic neighborhood!" -Ian Beard, Managing Partner Stone’s Throw Brewing

Admission to the block party is $5. Discounted armbands are available at the Stone’s Throw taproom for $3 from July 26-29. A portion of all gate revenue, alcohol, and food sales are donated to Preserve Arkansas, the only statewide non-profit organization focused on preserving Arkansas’s architectural and cultural resources. The previous two Block on Rock events have raised over $6000 for the group.

“Preserve Arkansas is thrilled to help celebrate the third birthday of Stone’s Throw Brewing on July 30! Not only is this a fun way to spend a Saturday, a portion of the proceeds from the Block on Rock Birthday Bash will benefit Preserve Arkansas’s education and advocacy efforts, which are designed to preserve Arkansas’s most important historic properties. Come celebrate Stone’s Throw Brewing’s adaptive reuse of a historic building in the MacArthur Park Historic District and support the statewide historic preservation efforts of Preserve Arkansas!" -Rachel Silva, Executive Director Preserve Arkansas

1200 people attended the first Block on Rock in 2014 taking planners completely by surprise. In 2015 organizers added a second block to accommodate more people, food trucks, and vendors. A stage was constructed for the musical acts, more volunteers helped with entry at the gates, other local breweries were invited, and more necessities like extra restrooms were included. The improvements lead to significantly shorter waits for food, drinks, and toilets despite attendance increasing to over 2000 last year.

“The first year was crazy. We sold more food in a couple of hours at Block on Rock than we did the whole time we were at Riverfest. This year I think we’re all planning on serving big numbers and we’ll be ready for them. After the Main Street Food Truck Festival this was the most trucks you found in one place last year.” -Justin Patterson, Owner The Southern Gourmasian

Block on Rock 3rd Birthday Bash publicity flier.
Both the 700 and 800 blocks of Rock St., located adjacent to the brewery, will be closed off for the event. Entrance gates will be located along Rock at the intersections of 7th, 8th and 9th Streets.  The stage and musical acts are sponsored by Road Runner convenience stores and are located just a few yards northwest of the brewery on Rock St. The Smittle Band performs at 5:00pm followed by the Big Dam Horns at 7:30pm; trees and buildings provide ample shade in the afternoon, and festival goers are encouraged to bring chairs. Beer is available in the brewery taproom and at an outdoor Stone’s Throw bar on the 700 block of Rock St.; food trucks and other beverage options will be available in the same area.

“Every year Block on Rock gets bigger, and every year we make improvements. This year’s festival builds upon the lessons learned from the past two and promises to provide quick and efficient service throughout so attendees can focus on having a good time.  We’re excited to have Road Runner sponsoring our stage this year with two local favorites: The Big Dam Horns and the Smittle Band. It will be the party of the summer!”  -Theron Cash, Managing Partner Stone’s Throw Brewing

The Stone’s Throw Brewing taproom & biergarten is open to the public Tuesday-Thursday, 4:00-9:00 pm, Friday 4:00-10:00pm, Saturday 12:00-10:00 pm, and Sunday 11:00 am-9:00 pm. The taproom features locally made bar snacks and a rotating selection of food trucks. The brewery sponsors weekly events including #HOPSandHOPE every Tuesday with beer sales benefiting charity, all night happy hour and the #BetterWithBeerFreeMovie series on Wednesdays, #ArkiePubTrivia at 6:30pm on Thursdays, new beer releases every first Friday of the month (and most other Fridays as well), free brewery tours at 1:00pm and beer infusions at 4:00pm on Saturdays, and beer to go during regular business hours including Sundays.

Historic Arkansas Museum Celebrates 75th Year With A Special Beer

Historic Arkansas Museum’s 2nd Friday Art Night features Historic Neighborhood
July 8, 5 – 8 pm

LITTLE ROCK (June 28, 2016) – Historic Arkansas Museum, a museum of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, will open its historic grounds during 2nd Friday Art Night on July 8 from 5 to 8 pm. There will be live music by The Pickoids and Historic Arkansas Museum’s 75th anniversary beer, developed by Stone’s Throw Brewing, will be released. This special 2nd Friday Art Night will feature the museum’s original historical exhibit, the museum’s grounds—a preserved remnant of Little Rock’s oldest neighborhood, saved from demolition by museum founder Louise Loughborough and opened to the public 75 years ago in July.

Guests are invited to travel back in time during this historic happy hour as they explore historic gardens and encounter costumed interpreters in the Woodruff Print Shop, Brownlee Kitchen and in Little Rock’s oldest surviving structure—the Hinderliter Grog Shop (c. 1827). Visitors can experience living history by meeting Mr. Hinderliter in the Grog Shop, make wax seals in the Print Shop and sample a unique pioneer drink in the Brownlee Kitchen. Guests who visit each site will win a Historic Arkansas Museum car decal and will have a chance to win a special prize.

George Bros. Historic Arkansas Ale – by Stone’s Throw Brewing

Little Rock’s first brewers were German-born Alexander and Henry George who operated a biergarten in the mid-1800s on Rock Street. For the museum’s 75th anniversary, Ian Beard, Theron Cash and Leah Lambert of Stone’s Throw Brewing drew on their own research and that of the museum’s Arkansas-made team to create a tribute beer similar to a 19th century George Bros. brew. The George brothers came from a warm region of Germany which suggests that their beer would have been similar to Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Additional research revealed which brewing ingredients would have been available to the George brothers. With the addition of wild Arkansas yeast harvested by Grant Chandler (Lost Forty Brewing) from plums in Dunbar Community Garden, this 75th anniversary ale is an Arkansas-made ale of historic proportions!

Currently on exhibit:

Stone's Throw Brewing Announces Summer Seasonal Releases & June Special Events

Three beers join line-up for June through August run

Stone's Throw Brewing released details on three summer seasonal releases today. The MacArthur Park neighborhood nano-brewery rotates three categories of beer every season: a session beers, a high-gravity beer, and India Pale Ale (IPA). The 2016 summer releases will be available in the brewery taproom beginning on Friday, June 3.

"Most breweries make one beer as a seasonal. We're all about variety, though, and decided one wasn't enough. The three seasonals allow us to keep the same type of beer on tap year round while still switching up the specific recipe on a regular basis. That way we have a new IPA every three months instead of three IPAs on tap simultaneously. It keeps it interesting." -Theron Cash, Managing Partner

Ich Bin Ein Berliner Weiss returns for a second year as the summer "session," or low alcohol beer. Session beers are a classic European tradition, the lower alcohol content allowing a drinker to enjoy many during a setting without becoming inebriated. As its name implies, Berliner Weiss originated in the German capital. This style of unfiltered wheat beer is known for its characteristic tartness, created by the introduction of a special strain of brewing bacteria. In biergartens around Berlin the tart flavor is countered with flavored syrups for a light, refreshing cocktail. Stone's Throw will offer woodruff, dark cherry grenadine, and ginger syrups from Pink House Alchemy in Bentonville as an addition to each pint of Ich Bin Ein during its summer run.

"Both lower alcohol and sour beers have been growing in popularity in the craft beer world. Ich Bin Ein Berliner Weisse is a great combination of these two trends, and the perfect patio beer. We're excited to try the Pink House syrups out this year. The different flavor combinations will make this a great go to summer sipper." -Ian Beard, Managing Partner

First introduced during the brewery's first month of business in August 2013, Two Timin' American IPA became a summer seasonal in 2014. IPAs were created in the 18th century to survive the long journey from England to its colonies in India. Higher levels of both alcohol and hops--a flowering vine used by brewers to balance the sweetness of malted barley--act as a preservative to prevent spoilage. Two Timin' incorporates Centennial hops from the Pacific Northwest which provide citrusy notes with a clean, not overly bitter finish. A process called "single-hopping" is used, where only one variety is added to the beer for bittering, aroma, and flavor.

"The first beers we made when we opened up were all larger scale versions of our homebrew recipes. Adding the Centennial hops while the beer is still in the fermenter, what brewers call dry-hopping, really brings out the big citrus flavor that make this beer great for hot weather" -Brad McLaurin, Partner

Debuting for the first time on June 3 is a new high gravity seasonal for the summer. Papa Geyer's Imperial Pilsner is a crisp and refreshing strong lager. At 9% alcohol by volume, the brew measures twice as strong as most beers. A large amount of malted grain is used to create a high level of fermentable sugar, known as gravity, and results in the increased alcohol. The name Papa Geyer is in honor of the German immigrant that ran a beer hall and biergarten one block from the Stone's Throw brewery building in the late 19th century.

"When we found out that an old German biergarten was located at Rock and 10th streets just a block away, we figured it was a sign from the beer gods that this was the neighborhood to be in. Naming a beer after the post was the least we could do!" -Shawn Tobin, Partner

Along with the summer seasonal release party, the brewery plans a full schedule of events both onsite and around Central Arkansas during the month of June.
