Rusty Barrel x Stone Mango Maya Milkshake IPA

Stone Brewing: "In 2019, we partnered with the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) to host a people’s choice homebrew competition at our Richmond, Virginia brewing facility. The clear favorite and winner of the competition was a creamy, hoppy, tropical creation from Richmond native Rusty Burrell of Rusty Barrel Home Brewing. Over the years, these competitions (which we’ve hosted as far back as 2009) have resulted in some of the most unique and sought-after beers we’ve brewed – only thanks to the ingenuity of folks like Rusty. No matter which beer takes the prize, everyone wins when creative brewers get to share their passion with the people. And it all starts with one batch.

Intense aromas and flavors of coconut, mango, fresh fruit, and vanilla are balanced by a creamy, thick body and pleasant sweetness. There are some underlying tropical notes from hops to round everything out. A very complex beer that unfolds with layer upon layer with every sip as all the components work together."

Stone Brings Back Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA

Really happy to see one of my favorites return! I was bummed when they took it away as there really aren't a lot of black IPAs around, and this one is delicious.

Stone Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager with Kris Ketcham

A new potential summer favorite via the mighty Stone Brewing: "In 1996, Stone Brewing was founded in San Diego County, just minutes from the border. Since then, influence from our southern neighbors has enriched and inspired us on our undying mission to brew bold, flavorful beers. One such inspiration is Stone Xocoveza, our imperial stout originally released in 2014 to bring the rich, complex flavors of Mexican hot chocolate to beer. It’s with mucho gusto that we now follow with our take on a classic lager that is similarly inspired (and tasty) - Stone Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager.

Brewer Ben Sheehan created this beer while working down at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station. Stone Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager’s inspiration comes from Southern California, which is vibrantly influenced by our neighbors to the South. California's spoiling, warm weather encourages outdoor activity year round - and now the rest of the nation can join in. From surfing our coasts, to snowboarding and biking in the mountains, off-roading through deserted lands, or boating and fishing in our lakes, Stone Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager is an excellent companion. It’s a thrillingly crisp, clean, refreshing Mexican-style lager that quenches thirsts, while gratifying taste buds via lime and sea salt."

Stone Moxee Gold IPA

You know I love me some Stone beers!

Here's their latest video: "Stone #MoxeeGoldIPA is the first in our Farm To Can Series, celebrating hop farmers and the incredible work they do.⁣

Behind every great beer are amazing stories of all the people, places and ingredients that culminate in what you have in your hand. The Stone Farm to Can Series is our heartfelt tribute to the dedicated farmers who cultivate the hops that help bring our beers to life. Each beer in this series features hops grown at a single specific farm as our way of paying homage to their harvest. Many of these growers breed and develop their own varieties, like CLS Farms in Moxee, Washington did with El Dorado hops, named for the mythical hidden City of Gold. Moxee lies nestled in Yakima Valley, the very real paradise of hop production in the American Pacific Northwest. Stone Moxee Gold IPA is loaded with Centennial and of course El Dorado hops, all sourced from the fruitful bines of CLS Farms. The valley itself may be mostly green, but its bounty of hops are as good as gold."

Stone Brewing Sails into 2019 with a Bold Tropical Lager

Celebrated independent craft brewer expands 2019 lineup with Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager

ESCONDIDO, CA (October 25, 2018) – This week, Stone Brewing offers fair warning for when the company’s newest year-round beer washes ashore early next year. With a long and celebrated heritage of big, bold and flavorful porters, stouts, sours, IPAs, strong ales and more, Stone is proud to continue this tradition of pushing boundaries with the release of Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager. The new beer debuts in California and Stone Brewing Tap Rooms this week, with an international launch to come next year.

“This is unlike your traditional lager,” said Jeremy Moynier, Stone Brewing Senior Manager of Brewing & Innovation. “When we were discussing what our next year-round beer might be we all agreed that we wanted something super flavorful and yet really crushable, all while exemplifying the genre-defying qualities we’re known for at Stone. So while we did our signature thing – seeking out the newest and most interesting hops to contribute big flavor – we really stayed focused on producing a balanced beer with classic lager characteristics. It turned out crisp, clean, intensely fruity, and definitely way crushable.”

The beer’s name is a nod to the uncharted tropical islands on which most of us would willingly be a castaway… provided that we could have our perfectly stocked beer fridge in tow. It’s just right for a self-imposed “three hour tour,” be it on an island, on a boat, or simply on the couch. Aromas of citrus, pineapple and coconut are followed by flavors of lime, orange and passion fruit. A newer hop variety – Cashmere – when harvested at just the right time imparts flavors of ripe cantaloupe that elevate the juicy qualities of this beer. A welcome oasis, Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager proves to be the perfect island companion to a tropically-inspired, fruit forward lineup of IPAs, including Stone Tangerine Express IPA, Stone Scorpion Bowl IPA, and the upcoming Stone Revengeful Spirit IPA.

“We are really excited to bring Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager to market,” shared Dominic Engels, Stone Brewing CEO.  “More than 75 percent of US beer sales are lagers, and while craft is a growing segment, a big piece of that is still Big Beer. Alongside a handful of other standout craft brewers with lagers, we’re really reinventing this style; bringing a finely crafted, intensely flavorful lager to the market in all 50 states and more than 40 countries. We’re honored to put high quality back at the forefront of this genre, and especially proud to be doing it as a staunchly independent craft brewer.”

The new addition to Stone’s lineup is now available at Stone Brewing Tap Rooms and throughout California in 12oz six-pack cans and draft. The lager packs a 5.8% ABV and is brewed to be enjoyed fresh, which means the rescue boat has 120-days to get the castaways home or, more likely, re-stock the island’s refrigerator.

Stone I'm Peach Double IPA

Stone Brewing: Who wants to kick fruit out of beer? Not us. When done right, adding orange or grapefruit or tangerine can contribute a deeper level of delicious complexity to the beer. In this case, peach was the perfect complement to enhance the substantial bill of hops in this double IPA.

May its reign last more than a few terms.

Stone Brewing - 2018

In the past year I've been fortunate enough to make it to Stone's Escondido brewery and also Liberty Station. The wife and I are also planning a trip to Richmond this year so I guess I have no choice but to somehow make it to the Berlin brewery as the icing on the cake soon. Anyway though, I love Stone. Watch the video I guess.

Stone Scorpion Bowl IPA

Stone Brewing: "To create a recipe so tropical and fruity without the addition of fruit was no feat our team of brewers would leave up to the gods. They took floral and citrus notes from Mosaic, Loral and Mandarina Bavaria hops to dish up a mouthwatering fruit punch to the palate. Get deserted on your own island or share with others. One thing is for sure: there is no need to light this one. It is already on fire."

Todd Haug / Stone "Saurer Axtmann"

Stone Brewing:"Have guitar, will travel. Check. Have mash paddle, will travel. Check. Have invitation to Berlin to brew, will travel. Hell yeah. Cue our friend Todd Haug. He checked all those boxes and joined us to make this inspired and unique creation. Our Stone Berlin Brewmaster Thomas Tyrell has spent many years studying and brewing versions of the consummate Berlin style, the Berliner Weisse. Todd was intrigued with the idea of überizing (wasn't a real word before, but it is now) the style and wanted to further überize (how quickly a new word can find its way into the lexicon) with the addition of ginger root and Citrus Hystrix leaf. They worked perfectly, as you'll see. Todd, Thomas and Greg all agreed they'd never tasted anything quite like it before, and that they all loved it. So now, it has traveled time and space to you. Check it!"

Stone Neapolitan Dynamite

Via Stone Brewing YouTube Channel: San Diego may be best known for its hop-forward IPAs, but this county has a long and proud history of stouts, porters and the dark arts. Case in point, the winners of this year’s American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned Stone Homebrew Competition: Paul Bischeri & Patrick Martinez and their champion creation, Neapolitan Dynamite. For our additional collaborator, we enlisted noted Stout Master Derek Gallanosa from Abnormal Beer Company to bring this ice cream sundae of a beer to life in full scale. The result is a rich, decadent beer, with the sweetness of the strawberry and vanilla balanced out by dark chocolate and coffee. Available in bottle and on draft, but not on a waffle cone, unfortunately.

Stone Brewing Cans Stone Tangerine Express IPA

ESCONDIDO, CA (August 17, 2017) – In February, Stone Brewing unleashed a juicy and tropical IPA brewed with whole tangerine and pineapple named Stone Tangerine Express IPA. Six months later the hugely flavorful and aromatic Stone Tangerine Express IPA is making its debut in six-packs of 12-ounce cans.

“We brew beers we like with hopes that our fans will like them too,” said Dominic Engels, Stone Brewing CEO. “In this case our co-founder Greg Koch had fallen in love with an experimental batch of Stone Tangerine Express IPA and insisted we bring it to market. Turns out our fans have loved it too, so that leaves us with the important task of making this beer as widely available as we can. There’s nothing quite like cracking into one of these cans and drinking in that complex tangerine aroma before the first sip.”

Cans now make up 30 percent of Stone’s package sales and the brewery now offers four of its year-round core beers in cans as well as select special releases.

Stone Tangerine Express IPA pours light golden in color with an aroma that’s bright, juicy and tropical. Stone’s brewers used whole tangerine puree to capture the essence of the bright flavors of the fruit with the addition of whole pineapple for a subtle, yet lingering tropical backnote. Neither the hops nor the fruit dominate, yet together they create several complex fruit layers, which can only be achieved by brewing with the entire fruit. Eight different hops give this beer its marked dankness overtones and refreshing bitterness. It’s an express ticket to a beach hammock getaway with refreshing drink in hand, complete with punchy tropical fruit character and Stone’s signature bold hop bitterness.

Stone Tangerine Express IPA has been nationally available in 22-ounce bottles and draft since February, 2017. Twelve-ounce six-pack cans will first be available throughout California in August, eventually rolling out nationally in January 2018. Stone Tangerine Express IPA remains one of Stone’s year-round core beers alongside Stone IPA, Stone Delicious IPA, Stone Ruination Double IPA 2.0 and Stone Ripper San Diego Pale Ale.

Quick Facts

Name: Stone Tangerine Express IPA
Stats: 6.7% ABV, 75 IBUs
Availability: 22-ounce bottles nationwide; 12oz, 6-pack cans in California beginning in early August, and nationally in January 2018
Featured Hops: Chinook, Magnum, Centennial, Citra, Sterling, Mosaic, Azzaca, Simcoe

TASTING NOTES

Appearance: Light golden with slight haze.
Aroma: Bright, fresh fruit aromas of pineapple, tangerine, and tangelo combine with citrus and tropical aromas from the hops.
Taste: An explosion of fresh fruit and bright hops join together to create several complex fruit layers. Taste is both fruity and hoppy leading to a long finish.
Palate: Crisp, clean, and refreshingly bitter. There is a pithy quality similar to biting into fresh fruit along with the back-end bitterness one would expect from a Stone Brewing IPA.
Overall: Working with fruit can be amazing and using good quality fruit is key to achieving that wonderful freshness and avoiding artificial flavorings. The high-end pureed fruit used here blends exceptionally well with the aroma and flavors from the hops creating a multi-layered IPA that also has the dankness and bitterness that superbly rounds out this beer.

Stone’s Throw Brewing Block on Rock Returns

4th Annual Birthday Celebration on July 29 Benefits Historic Preservation

Little Rock, AR, July 17, 2017– MacArthur Park neighborhood nano-brewery Stone’s Throw Brewing announced plans for their fourth annual Block on Rock Birthday Bash today. The street festival is a celebration of the brewery’s opening in 2013 and involves local food trucks, breweries, a distillery, bands, and community groups. Block on Rock is on Saturday, July 29 from 4:00-10:00pm on the two blocks of Rock St. north of the brewery’s location at 402 E 9th St in Little Rock.

"We love the way this little street festival has grown over the past four years! It’s by far the biggest event we do at the brewery, and we are able to improve and grow the block party each time. The support we get from the community on this is extremely humbling.”
Ian Beard, Managing Partner Stone’s Throw Brewing

Admission to the block party is $5. Discounted armbands are available at the Stone’s Throw taproom for $3 from July 25-28. A portion of all gate revenue, alcohol, and food sales are donated to Preserve Arkansas, the only statewide non-profit organization focused on preserving Arkansas’s architectural and cultural resources. The previous three Block on Rock events have raised over $7800 for the group.

“Preserve Arkansas is thrilled to help celebrate the fourth birthday of Stone’s Throw Brewing on July 29! Not only is this a fun way to spend a Saturday, a portion of the proceeds from the Block on Rock Birthday Bash will benefit Preserve Arkansas’s education and advocacy efforts, which are designed to preserve Arkansas’s most important historic properties. Come celebrate Stone’s Throw Brewing’s adaptive reuse of a historic building in the MacArthur Park Historic District and support the statewide historic preservation efforts of Preserve Arkansas! ”
Rachel Silva, Executive Director Preserve Arkansas

1200 people attended the first Block on Rock in 2014 taking planners completely by surprise. Since then organizers have added a second block to accommodate more people, food trucks, and vendors. A stage was constructed for the musical acts, more volunteers helped with entry at the gates, other local breweries were invited, and more necessities like extra restrooms were included. The improvements lead to significantly shorter waits for food, drinks, and toilets despite attendance increasing to over 2000 in the following years.

“The first year was crazy. We sold more food in a couple of hours at Block on Rock than we did the whole time we were at Riverfest. This year I think we’re all planning on serving big numbers and we’ll be ready for them. After the Main Street Food Truck Festival this is one of the biggest gatherings of trucks you’ll find in Little Rock.”
Justin Patterson, Owner The Southern Gourmasian

Both the 700 and 800 blocks of Rock St., located adjacent to the brewery, will be closed off for the event. Entrance gates will be located along Rock Street at the intersections of 7th, 8th and 9th Streets.  The mainstage is located just a few yards northwest of the brewery on Rock St. The Big Dam Horns return again this year and will perform a double set starting at 6pm; trees and buildings provide ample shade in the afternoon, and festival goers are encouraged to bring chairs. Beer is available at the brewery itself and at an outdoor Stone’s Throw bar on the 700 block of Rock St.; food trucks and other beverage options will be available in the same area.

“The Big Dam Horns have enjoyed playing Block on Rock the past couple of years and it’s great we can play again in 2017. We’ll keep it funky for a good ole fashion street dance all night long!”
Theron Cash, Managing Partner Stone’s Throw Brewing & Bassist Big Dam Horns

New this year is a partnership with the Arkansas Arts Center involving the Pike-Terry-Fletcher House. The grounds of the mansion will be part of the festival area creating a giant biergarten for people to enjoy. Rackensack Folklore Society of Pulaski County will play on the front porch with a rotating line-up of performers from 4:00-10:00pm. The Arkansas Arts Center will also be presenting demonstrations for festival goers to enjoy.

“The Arkansas Arts Center is excited to be part of Block on Rock and to showcase the talent of some great local artists. Robert Bean is doing a drawing demo, Beth Lambert and Julia Baugh are working on a pinch pot project, Randie Young has a chalk art project for adults and youth, and renowned hula hooper Katie Sunshine performs!”

Spencer Jansen, Manager of Member Experience Arkansas Arts Center

25% of alcohol sales and 10% of other sales will benefit Preserve Arkansas, the only statewide non-profit organization focused on preserving Arkansas’s architectural and cultural resources.
