Beer School: what is malt?

Beer School: what is malt? | The Craft Beer Channel

We may all rave about hops most of the time, but without malt there would be no beer. This week we head to Muntons, one of the UK's leading maltsters to learn more about the grains that go in our beer. We see out how it's harvested and made – as well as what makes great malt and how it's used.

Huge thanks to Muntons for the tour and Burnt Mill for the beers!

Beer School: how does barrel ageing work?

Here's a new fun informative video from the good folks at The Craft Beer Channel and their Beer School series of YouTube videos.

"Once upon a time all beers were barrel-aged. Now we have big metal fermenters and kegs instead, but some brewers are going back to the wood.

In this episode of Beer School Jonny visits Brewdog and Siren Craft Brew to talk about barrel-aged beers – brews given extra depth by time spent mixed with wood and spirit.

This alchemy creates some of the most complex and exciting beers in the world."

Beer School: how is sour beer made?

Been a while since we've had a bit of beer schooling, so I thought I'd share this cool video on one of my favorite beer styles, sours, from the excellent YouTube page The Craft Beer Channel. Check it out!
"The Craft Beer Channel's Jonny travels to Belgium to meet the men who make the world's best sour beers, including the world famous Cantillon.

Sour beers may be an acquired taste, but they are one seriously worth acquiring. They were the first beers ever brewed so every beer owes it a debt – here's how they are made. Now pucker up and give them their due.

As in the video, here are our favorite sour beer breweries (in no particular order):

Cantillon
Beersel
Boon
Tilquin
Lindemans
Liefmans
Wild Beer Co
Russian River
New Belgium
Almanac
Siren Craft Brew
Celtic Experience"

Beer School: What Are Hops?

Here's a great video from The Craft Beer Channel talking about hops. If I had made a New Year's resolution, it wouldn't have been weight loss or less drinking or to be a better person (puke) any of that crap, it would be to further my beer education. Of course. So let's do it together! I'll try to find and post more of this type of video.

Follow these guys on YouTube, they post a lot of great beer videos like this.

"Ever wondered what hops are, or where they come from, or what they do in a beer? Well wonder no more! Jonny tells you all from a Saaz hop farm in the Czech Republic. This is the first in our new mini series Beer School - teaching you the ins and outs of beer. BIG PROPS to Pilsner Urquell for taking us out there and to Mike of GoodBeerHunting.com for the amazing shot of the hops falling."
