Nitro Beer Explained -- Beer History & Beer Science
Although Nitrogen has been used in beer for 60 years, this beer
innovation is still winning the minds and hearts of drinkers around the
world today. Nitro Beers are creamy, foamy, and delicious. But how did
they come to be? And are there any drawbacks to replacing good old CO2?
Ryan answers all these questions today on Beer by The Numbers.

I'm Now At 50 Brewery Visits For The Year
Wow, my brewery visits for 2018 are really starting to build up. At the end of August my wife and I took our annual anniversary trip and decided to go to the mountains instead of the ocean this year. We spent time between Asheville, NC and Chattanooga, TN and had an amazing time in both great cities. We'd been to Asheville before but it's always worth the trip for the wonderful breweries, not to mention the food and cool artsy vibe. We made it to 11 breweries in all, highlighted by 1st time trips to two of the big boys, New Belgium and Sierra Nevada. Both were just amazing. Here's all the stops:
Asheville, NC
Next we made our way over to Chattanooga for a few days, not sure what to expect as neither of us had been there before. We didn't take long to start wishing that we had more time, what with great food, beer, beautiful sights and a white-water rafting trip. I recommend this city to anybody looking for some fun. Their brewery scene is pretty cool too, and seems to be growing. Here's where we made it to:
And finally, the weekend before last I went to Dallas to see some bands (Clutch and Sevendust) on Sunday and conveniently booked my hotel where I could walk to several breweries. A couple of them I'd been to before, but I did make it to one new place for me, Pegasus City Brewery. Nice folks and a cool set-up, they weren't focused on hoppy beer, which I found sort of unique. I had a nice black lager and porter. Would recommend.
Dallas, TX
Peticolas Brewing
Pegasus City Brewing
Noble Rey Brewing
So now we're caught up, and heading to Nashville this weekend! Hoping for a visit to a favorite of mine, Bearded Iris, and of course some of the usual stops like Yazoo and Jackalope.
Asheville, NC
Bhramari Brewing
Twisted Leaf
Wedge Brewing
Wicked Weed/Funkatorium
Burial Brewing Co.
Catawba Brewing
Green Man Brewing
New Belgium
One World Brewing
Sierra Nevada

Squatters Craft Beers Doubles Efforts in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
SALT LAKE CITY, UT, OCT 3, 2018 – Squatters Craft Beers, in partnership
with the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Real Men Wear Pink campaign, is
raising funds and awareness for the second year in a row to benefit
breast cancer research during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month.
Squatters' number one selling brand – Hop Rising Double IPA – will wear a pink can for the entire month of October. Squatters Craft Beers has pledged to donate $0.05 for each special can sold during the campaign. New in 2018, Squatters will double down and donate a portion of proceeds from special pink-canned Full Suspension Pale Ale 12-packs. “We are excited to include an additional Squatters package this year to support the American Cancer Society and generate much-needed funds to combat this devastating disease,” says Senior Marketing Manager for Squatters Craft Beers, Amy Tangaro.
Alongside or in memory of the women in their lives who have been touched by cancer, Real Men Wear Pink advocates will rally to raise funds and awareness during the month of October. Activists are encouraged to don their pinkest gear, mobilize their communities and compete to become the top fundraiser in support of lifesaving research and patient-supporting services.
Squatters Hop Rising is currently sold in 19 states and the pink cans will be distributed throughout, including in Squatters’ home state of Utah, where Hop Rising reigns as the top-selling craft beer in the market. Squatters Full Suspension Pale Ale pink 12-packs will make an appearance in 7 states and are expected to go fast. “Hop Rising and Full Suspension are two of our most-loved and best-performing beers, and the response we had from last year’s ACS campaign was enormous. We’re excited to be partnering again in 2018,” adds Squatters Craft Beers Chief Operating Officer, Adam Curfew.
According to the ACS Cancer Facts & Figures 2017, an estimated 1,460 women in the state of Utah will be diagnosed with breast cancer and an estimated 270 will die from the disease this year.

Founders Brewing Co. Harvest Ale
Founders Brewing Co.: "Every fall, we get the privilege of making our wet-hopped ale, Harvest
Ale. We take wet hop cones exclusively from Michigan hop farms, they're
picked in the morning and used as soon as possible that day. That
freshness really makes a difference.
Harvest Ale – an impossibly aromatic and bright IPA bursting with fresh
pine, melon and citrus notes. Our ode to the beauty that is the wet,
American hop."

Craft Beer 10 Years Ago
I can tell you where I was mostly drinking 10 years ago, The Flying Saucer in downtown Little Rock (pretty much the only place for craft beer in 2008), but I can't tell you what all I was drinking. The Arkansas craft beer scene was yet to take off and I do remember for sure there were very little can choices for my lake trips at the time but I know there were several of the breweries I still drink a lot of today in the state, like New Belgium, Sierra Nevada, Rogue and Boulevard. Boy have their been a lot of changes since then! Cans are abundant, Arkansas has 40+ breweries and most of the big national breweries are available in the state now.
Check out Beer By The Numbers video on the craft beer scene in 2008 for a quick trip down memory lane of your own.
"The Craft Beer industry has come a long way in 10 years. Aside from the sheer growth and number of breweries, the tastes of drinkers and brewers have also evolved. Join Ryan in turning back the clock to take a look at the craft beer scene in 2008."
